Artist Statement
These images deal with house music because it is the dominant obsession in my life. I drive to house music, I make love to house music, I dance to house music.
Fundamentally, this project is about joy. This body of work is meant to communicate the joy that I feel when I listen to house music and the joy the dancers feel as they channel this music.
Are the images voodoo, trance, spiritual ecstasy or religious revival? You be the judge.
Process Statement
Photographed in New York and the U.K. over the past decade, my methodology for shooting is to scan the dancefloor for each song, identify who is connecting most to that song, and dance with that person. When I feel they are about to achieve a transcendent state, I take the image. I continue dancing with that participant, then when a new song comes on, I repeat the process with a new dancer.
All the colors in the images are native captured in camera.
